Notes:

Mrs. Nancy Israel
My mother was the daughter of Stephen and Elizabeth Williams and was born in Washington County Georgia, 27th of September, 1815, and moved with her mother and father to Sumter County and there joined the Old School Baptist when young. She and my father soon married in 1839. She was the
mother of twelve children, leaving six children to mourn her loss and a great number of grandchildren and many friends. Her disease was pneumonia. She was taken sick at her daughter's while on a visit and urged them to bring her home, which they did, and after an illness of three weeks she passed away without a struggle on the 30th of December, 1887. She often remarked to the writer of this notice that when she was called to die it would be light. She would say to me that the poor savior dreaded death. She would talk of hard trials here, but she would say she hoped it would be better in another world. She was not only a mother to the children but a mother to all who knew her, and if I can understand, a perfect mother in Israel. While I can only say to those bereaved that we should not grieve as those who have no hope, but our loss is her gain.
George W. Israel

Hansel Hammond in Outfit that Wins High Praise
"Pvt. Hansel R. Hammond is now fighting in France with the famous fighting 90th Division, one of the first divisions to land in the Invasion of the Continent. His Regiment, commanded by Colonel Christian W. Clarke, Jr., and his division, have received much praise for magnificent contributions to the Battle of France. The 90th Division gained its fame in combat among the hedgerows of Normandy in the early days of the Invasion and later the famous Battle of Foret de Mont Castre. This same outfit figured in the capture of the important city of LeMans and was instrumental in closing the bloody Falaise Gap and the resulting capture of several thousand German prisoners."
Pvt. Hammond joined the Division March, 1942, and has participated in some of this division's many big battles across France.
This soldier is Field Lineman in Communications Platoon. He was awarded the Bronze Star for bravery and the Purple Heart for wounds at the Battle of the Bulge

Obituary:
On Friday morning, about 3 o'clock Oct. 1, the death angel came to the home of Mrs. Bob Hasten, and carried away a dear and precious mother, Mrs. Martha Jane Hammond. She spent the last three weeks of her life with her eldest daughter, Mrs. Hasten, in Hainesville.
She was born Oct. 27, 1876 in Hunt County, near Greenville. Before her marriage to Joseph N. Hammond, Oct. 14, 1891, at Greenville. Texas, she was Miss Martha Jane Pilkinton.
She made her peace with her God in 1929, was converted and united with the Redland Baptist Church and lived a true Christian life until her death.
Mrs. Hammond had spent most of her life in Wood County, and reared one of the largest families of the county. Her husband passed away fifteen years ago. She was the mother of sixteen children, one dying in infancy; all were present during her illness and death except one son, Pvt. Thurman A. Hammond, who is serving in the armed forces in Alaska.
Mrs. Hammond was laid to rest in the cemetery, beside her husband, at 3 o'clock Saturday afternoon. Bro. B.T. Shoemake had charge of the service. Her grandsons were the pall bearers.
She leaves to mourn her going, fifteen children, fifty-nine grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren; some nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
Surviving are: nine daughters, Mrs. Faye Hasten, Joe Stevens, Mrs. Estell Hill, of Hainesville, Mrs. Bill White of Crow, Mrs. Alta Turner, Mrs. Bertha Henderson, Mrs. Lura Webb, of Mt. Pisgah, Mrs. Pansey
Gregsham of Mineola, and Mrs. Opal Bradshaw of Melissa. Six sons: Joe, Robert, Dock, and George Hammond of Redland, Pvt. Thurman Hammond who is with the armed forces in Alaska and Cpl. Hansel R. Hammond stationed at Camp Granite, California..
