Letter written by S. H. Williams for Allen Avery's pension
Americus, Georgia May 23rd 1904
Allen Avery was a member of Co. B 11th Regiment Georgia Volunteers which was mustered in service on the 3rd day of July Eighteen hundred and Sixty - one by Maj. Calhoun in Atlanta, Georgia and served from that date until July 1863 when he was detailed to drive beef cattle. The entire squad was taken prisoner. I did not see Allen Avery anymore until some time in July 1864. I was wounded on May 6th 1864 and came home on furlough.
I learned here at home that Avery was at home on furlough and I went to see him and several others of my company that was at home to send them back to the company. I found Avery and other sick. Allen Avery had chronic diarrhea. I saw the Enrolling Officer Pony
Hollis of this district and told him to take the entire squad before the board of doctors at Albany and those that were able to do duty to send them to the company. Allen Avery was one that was pronounced unfit for duty and was left at home. I did not see him any more until
after the surrendered though he was not a deserter. I returned to Virginia.
S. H. Williams

1st Lieutenant, Co. B 11th Georgia Volunteer Infantry
P.S. Allen Avery was at home at the time that his absence is not accounted for sick so said the board of doctors with chronic diarrhea and has the same disease. Allen if illiterate and not very intelligent but did his full duty as a soldier when able.

Notes:

James Gideon Tanner was born in Thomas Bridge near Monroe, Georgia, on June 6, 1885. He learned to fiddle at the age of 14 when an uncle died and willed him an instrument.

His fiddling can be heard on all but a few of his recordings, although he occasionally played the banjo.

In the 1910's and 20's he was a well known fiddler in the Atlanta area, appearing frequently at fiddler's conventions. His recording career began in 1924 when A&R man, auditioning prospective talent in the Atlanta area, asked him to come to New York to make some recordings.

He brought Riley Puckett with him and the pair cut their first records on March 7. In the next eight years Tanner recorded primarily with the Skillet Lickers, but also did solo albums or recorded with Fate Norris and/or Arthur Tanner, his younger brother.

Old timers who knew Gid said he was more of a showman and comedian than a fiddler. It is true that both his fiddling and singing were of a rough quality, but he used them to good advantage and produced several sides, which artistically hold their own with the heart of hillbilly music.

Tanner was never entirely in the music profession. All his life he was primarily a chicken farmer and remained so until his death in 1960
